Why granite?

Belle Tout Lighthouse Tower is constructed from Granite, which was used extensively in 19th-century lighthouse construction, because it solved several major engineering problems at once.

Why granite was preferred?

Strength against waves and storms. Lighthouses on exposed coasts had to survive:

hurricane-force winds,
saltwater corrosion,
constant wave impact,
and flying shingle or debris.

Granite is extremely hard and dense, so it resists cracking and erosion far better than softer stone like sandstone or brick.

This became especially important for offshore towers such as:

Bishop Rock Lighthouse
Wolf Rock Lighthouse
The Needles Lighthouse

where waves could hit with enormous force.

Durability in salt air

Saltwater rapidly damages:

iron,
mortar,
softer masonry,
and timber.

Granite withstands salt crystallisation and chemical weathering exceptionally well, making it ideal for coastal structures expected to last centuries.

Many granite lighthouses from the early 1800s are still standing with much of their original stone intact.

Precision stone cutting

By the early 19th century, engineers like James Walker used carefully shaped granite blocks that interlocked tightly.

This offered advantages:

towers behaved almost like one solid mass,
joints resisted water penetration,
and curved tapered towers could distribute wave forces efficiently.

The technique evolved from earlier pioneering work by engineer John Smeaton on Eddystone Lighthouse.

Fire resistance

Earlier lighthouses often used timber internally. Fires were a serious risk because lighthouse lamps burned oil continuously.

Granite:

does not burn,
protects internal structures,
and contains heat better than many alternatives.

Prestige and permanence

Granite also symbolised permanence and authority. Trinity House wanted lighthouse towers to project reliability and national maritime strength. Many were intentionally monumental in appearance, almost like coastal fortresses or classical towers.

Why Aberdeen granite became famous

A great deal of lighthouse granite came from northeast Scotland, especially “Aberdeen granite,” because it was:

exceptionally hard,
fine-grained,
and available in large blocks.

It became one of Britain’s premier engineering stones during the Industrial Revolution.

At Belle Tout, Aberdeen granite was combined with local limestone during construction in the 1830s. And, despite all the odds, Belle Tout stands proudly on Beachy Head Cliffs, East Sussex today.
